This locomotive 3005 is quite old, most likely from year 1957 or 1958, when my father visited Germany.

By googling from the internet I found out, that the conversion of this locomotive with Märklin mfx conversion set (item 60923) is not officially supported. Anyhow this installation is very easy, no major problems were identified, only motor terminals needs some extra insulation.

This locomotive was originally purchased as an extension set, item number 3205 (can be found from example from Märklin catalog 1960 or 1963/64). At 1964 this set set was sold at 115,00 FIM (Finnish Markka). Text from year 1964 catalog:

Express train (without transformer): Locomotive 3005, express passenger coach, 4024 dining car and 4026 luggage van. Train 40 in. long. Twelve 5100 curved track sections and six 5106 straight sections, including feeder section.

The German Federal railways' Class 23 engines are used on medium and heavy passengner services, as well as express and ordinary goods. Engine and tender are both built by the latest welding processes, and the design is good enough to allow speds of 110 kilometres (about 68 miles) per hour running forward and 85 kilometres (about 53 miles) an hour when running tender first. As this type can run tender first on main lines, it is frequently used for heavy suburban and inter-urban traffic as well, instead of tank engines.

The Märklin US Catalog from year 1957 tells us the following:

A highly successfull model

The German Federal Railways Class 23 locomotives are employed in hauling medium and heavy passegner trains, fast stopping trains and light express and goods trains. Engine and tender are both of the latest welded construction and thei design is so good that the engines are permitter to run at 110 kilometres (about 70 miles) per hour forwards and 85 kilometres (about 53 miles) an hour in reverse. As this type of engine can be run at such high speed in reverse, is is also frequently used for heavy suburban and interurban traffic, in place of tank engines.

3005 $23.50

Passegner engine with separate ternder, modelled on the German Federal Railways Class 23 prototype; ten wheeled 2-6-2 type; remote control reversing with additional hand lever. Heusinger (Walschaerts) valve motion. Both pony trucks sprung on the track to avoid any risk of derailment and provide good running on curves. Coupling hooks fitted to the trucks, giving full coupling facilities at the front end also. Plastic tyres on the rear driving wheels increase the tractive effort. Specially low-geared motor. Two electric headlights. Strong, Dull black all-metal casing with accurate scale model reproductions of the boiler fitting and all-over cab of the fullsized original. Cast metal frame. The tender, close coupled to the engine, is a faithful reproduction the the welded tender of the original running on two bogies. Automatic coupling and numerous details. Length over buffers 9½ in. Weight, including tender, approximately 19½ ozs.

Data sheets

please see attachments section below.

Engine conversion to MFX

More images from the conversion can be found from album.

Before conversion

Here is a picture from the engine prior the conversion

Cover removed, original engine clearly visible. There isn't very much space inside this locomotive.

marklin.homeip.net/content/3005028-old-parts-removed-left-side

Parts removed (Anchor, brush plate and magnet taken away) and gears are now cleaned. Those two leads that are somehow visible are connected to front lights and to shoe. These leads are original.

Cleaning and oiling done!

Motor conversion to high effiency propulsion type

New motor fitted to place. Everything goes right to their places, no problems.

Now decorder is remporalily fitted to body and preliminary testing can be started.

Replacing reverse unit with Mfx decoder

Motor terminal must be protected by extra insulation, as the cover comes so near to terminals (for completed insulation please see last pictures on this page).

Completed

All parts fitted in. Completed and tested. Everything works now fine.

Replaced parts

These parts were taken from the engine.

ESU mfx decoder

Because of most of my Märklin 60923 decoders stopped suddendly working after a short circuit, I changed the decoder to ESU LokPilot 3.0 mfx decoder, product id 61600.
